COMMAND SGT. MAJ. DENNIS E. DEFREESE


CSM Dennis E. Defreese entered the U.S. Army on July 24, 1984 in Chicago, Ill. He completed Basic and Infantry AIT at Fort Benning, Ga. CSM Defreese began his career at Fort Knox as a rifleman and assistant gunner with 4th Battalion, 54th Infantry Regiment. He was then assigned to 1st Battalion, 39th Infantry in Baumholder, Germany, serving as a team leader and squad leader. CSM Defreese then served as a section leader with 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry (Rakkasans) at Fort Campbell, Ky., and deployed in support of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. CSM Defreese also served with the Rakkasans with 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment as a platoon sergeant and first sergeant.

CSM Defreese served as a recruiter in Chicago and as a drill sergeant at Fort Knox, Ky. In July of 2003 CSM Defreese returned to 3-187 and served as the B Company first sergeant during Operation Iraqi Freedom I. He was then assigned as the first sergeant of HHC, 101st ABN Division before assignment as the CSM of 3-187 Infantry Regiment, deploying as the Battalion CSM twice, for OIF IV and OIF VI. CSM Defreese was then selected and assigned as the Brigade CSM for 1BCT, 10th Mountain DIV in February of 2009 and deployed as the BDE CSM to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom X. His most recent assignment was as the Brigade CSM for 1st BCT, 4th Infantry Division.

CSM Defreese has attended all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System and is a graduate of Class 53 of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. He is also a graduate of Airborne; Air Assault; Rappel Master; Recruiter and Drill Sergeant School. CSM Defreese holds a Baccalaureate Degree from Excelsior College.

CSM Defreese's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (1st Oak Leaf Cluster); Bronze Star Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster); Purple Heart; Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster); Air Medal; Army Commendation Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster); Army Achievement Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster); Good Conduct Medal (9th Award); Combat Infantryman Badge w/star; Parachutist Badge; Air Assault Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge; Drill Sergeant Identification Badge; and Gold Army Recruiter Badge. He is a member of the Order of St. Maurice (Centurion) and the Order of St. Barbara.


1AE mission
First Army Division East mobilizes, trains, deploys, and demobilizes Reserve Component Forces IAW Combatant Commanders, Department of the Army, and FORSCOM directives. Provides training to Joint, Interagency, Combined, and Active Army Forces as directed. Provide training support to Reserve Component Forces for Contingency Expeditionary Force and Deployment Expeditionary Force requirements.
